vintage trays

When I was a kid, we would go to my grandparent's house in South Florida every summer for about 2 weeks. It was every kid's dream. They lived on a few acres with a huge pond for fishing, a swimming pool with a diving board and every pool toy imaginable, several horses that we could ride whenever we wanted, unlimited icecream and popsicles in the deep freeze on the patio. It was truly a slice of heaven. Things changed as we got older, but my grandparents always had those "old faithfuls" that were always there. My grandma was one of those stunningly beautiful women that always smelled amazing and her makeup was perfectly applied. She had an old mirrored tray that layed on her dresser with a large collection of perfume with some rings and pearls. She would let all of us girl cousins spray eachother and I always always alway remember that mirrored tray. And you remember me telling you that I am a sentimental fool! It's funny because neither of my sisters remember that tray or half of the other items in their house. She had it since I can remember and still has it. Hmmm.....hopefully she will hand that off to me one day. :)
So yeah, I have thing for mirrored trays, especially the vintage ones. I found this one for $1.99 at the Salvation Army. It was a little rusty and the mirror was dusty. I took it home and removed the glass. I cleaned it up and then spray painted the brass part. I did a hot pink for my daughter because she wanted to keep her bracelets on it since I have one too in my room. Here with the spray paint that I already had in my garage. But maybe a pretty yellow would be nice? It's always a fun display in your bathroom to have a little home for your scents. or your jewelry. Actually, I have my jewelry board, but having a tray in the entry way is sometimes a nice "catch all" before it actually makes it's way back to the board.
So, because of that very fond memory, if I see a vintage tray and it's a good price, I can't pass it up. I have a few now and I don't only use them only for perfume or jewelry display. I have used them as serving pieces as well. They are beautiful if you have a few on the dining room table with mini cupcakes or muffins. The reflection of the mirror adds so much glamour as well. Let me know if you find any trays that you love!

Megen's throw Pillows for sale

Hey Guys! So, I guess it's obvious by now that I'm obsessed with throw pillows. I change them out each season and other times....well....just because. My sister in law has been sewing for years and just recently started making pillow covers. She has a 4 month old baby (cutest thing ever) and has decided to start a little hobby while cutie pie naps 3 times a day. Here are some that she has in her own living room to show you what she already has and is ready to sell. The teal waverly lattice print has always been one of my favorites. It's an indoor/outdoor pillow and the color goes great with almost anything.

Below is a bunch of fabric that she already has and can make you pillows at any time.

You truly wont find anyone that makes pillows as cheap as Megen. This pillow below she made for herself, and I actually bought the exact pillow on etsy months back. I paid about $30 for one pillow cover and that was WITHOUT the pillow insert. Megen would make that pillow AND include the pillow insert for about $22. She has now made me several pillows for my own home.

Here is my family room. The Dwell navy trellis pillows in the back, Megen also made for me. The link to the that fabric is here. Her prices vary depending on size of the pillow, if you have your own fabric, or if you want an insert or not.

Here is my basement/play room. She made the chevron pillows for me and I love them.

Ok, details: The pillows have the envelope back. All of her pillows are double stitched. She does an amazing job. She will also send pillow covers for people who live out of the area, but won't include the insert. Just email her if you want any pillows or have any questions. She is prompt in getting back to you and usually has the pillows finished within a couple days. Her email is You can also check out her blog here. Also, looking at fabric can be completely overwhelming. May I suggest In my opinion, the best fabrics on that website are any of the premiere fabrics, Robert Allen, Dwell, Waverly, Nicey Jane, and Amy Butler. Send Meg an email. She'd love to hear from you!!

my son's nursery

Welcome to Emmett's nursery. Several people have emailed me asking me where I purchased the large letter "e" and a few other items. So, here is a breakdown of his room. Emmett's little room is one of my favorites. It is so happy. Here is Emmett the day we took him home from the hospital and he seemed quite pleased with his nursery decor. :)And when did this happen?? He just turned 2 and still loves his room more than ever. I'm wanting to show pics too because it won't be too much longer that we paint over the whole thing and start a big boy room when he gets bunk beds with his sis. Either I re-paint or I paint over just the blue lines with a gender nuetral color like lime green. We'll see.

My husband and I were walking by one of our favorite baby stores and we noticed that it was going out of business. I was SO BUMMED. Seriously bummed. I had gone in there so much that I became buds with the owners. They had 2 things left in the outfit and this bedding. The price tag said $500, buuuuutttt since they were going out of business and everything must go, we scored it for $120! Since the bedding was such a good price, we decided to design the nursery around the bedding. The brand is Duc Duc and they have adorable mod baby stuff!

I think the most beautiful part of E's nursery is that friends were so generous in giving me gift cards that his nursery for us was close to free. And that's always a beautiful thing, right? Thanks for stopping in Emmett's nursery. It will be changing soon though. :(

A Really Great Find

Spoiler Alert: This is for locals (Northern Virginia) only, which I know is kind of annoying. Sorry. BUT....I wanted to share with you NOVA friends a fabulous store and let me tell you, the name could not be any more appropriate. It's called "Really Great Finds." It is directly across the street from the Old Luckett's store. It has weird hours, so make sure and check their website before you go out there. Ok, so here is my find! I saw this bookshelf made out of logs. I was in love at first glance. The store typically has great prices, but I thought the shelf would still be about $150 or so. There is some guy in the area that makes bookshelves and then delivers it to their store to sell. The price tag said, $22. I thought there had to be a mistake. I asked the woman selling it, and she said that it was correct. $22!! Needless to say, I was excited. I wanted to put it in my son's room, but I was having a hard time finding the space for it. So, we put it in the play room. It has worked out nicely. I love it. And how fun that each shelf is different? To be perfectly honest, I felt kinda bad paying so little. Someone obviously worked hard on this. I think it is very West Elm-ish

Do you like how I neatly staged the pieces on the table? Ha.
Come on and I both know that it really always looks like this......

I go out there quite a bit. A few of my friends have already told me that they want one, so if I see any more, I'll grab them and keep them in my "store." ( my garage )

clover table

When I sit down to read my latest design magazines or if I am reading home design blogs, I always take note of various pieces of furniture that I like. Most of the time I can't afford them, but hey, if I like it, I WILL find it for cheaper! Ok, so it's kind of a challenge. ;) I have seen this table in tons of blogs and magazines. It's from an online store called Ooomph. I love it. The shape brings so much character. The table is $395, and like my husband would say, "No table should cost that much unless it's cooking me dinner." I mean, $395 for this itsy bitsy table? This pink one below is the one from Oomph. It comes in 16 different colors.
Ok, and this picture I found from one of my favorite blog sites, I suwanee. The author, Shannon was in New York City and loved this chair in a home boutique that she was in. Of course, I noticed the little clover table behind the chair. I don't know what the price tag was on that table, but if it was in NYC at a home store, my guess is it was in the hundreds.
Check out the baby I found at Homegoods. (Fairfax if you are interested) I pulled out my trusty measuring tape to make sure the measurements were the same and yes, they were. Also, you can't tell from my bad phone pic, but there is an indentaion at the top of the table, so if you really wanted to, you could wallpaper the top. Oh, and I didn't mention the price. $50. score.

My Best Friend's Wedding

My Best friend, Lauren is getting married and I since I am the matron of honor, I had the privilege of throwing her a shower. It was a wonderful time, and really, showers are just the greatest because how many times do you have your childhood, high school, and college friends all together for a big party? So great. Lauren and I have been friends since we were 9 years old! In Junior high, we used to buy BRIDE magazines and stick tissues (clean ones! ) in the pages that we liked. Strange I know. But, now it's the real thing!! Here is the beautiful bride to be!!I'm sorry but, I must insert a photo here. 7th grade I believe. Gotta love it. I did the best I could to go along with Lauren's wedding theme. They are getting married at a historic house and the wedding is going to be rustic meets vintage with the colors of gray, orange, and a pop of turquoise. Stunning. I ordered this burlap fabric for the runner over a white tablecloth. I do love burlap! For a runner, make sure you measure how long your table is and that you have enough. I ordered 3 yards.

It's also fun to repurpose things that you already have. I had a rustic candle tray from Pottery Barn and I thought it would be perfect to hold the napkins with silverware in it. the table setting

I put together a wall of pictures for the happy couple

I found this serving tray at Homegoods and the orange color matched just right!
"B" napkins in honor of Lauren's new last name. :)
opening gifts

Remember these glass jars that I found at Luckett's? I tied some turquoise ribbon on there. The middle jar I just filled with some decorative rocks since you obviously can't get it out without spilling. ;)
My hubby made little tags for the drinks
With the leftover burlap fabric, I covered some glass jars and then just added some thick ribbon.
And the orange napkins from Target were perfect!Showers are never really going to be cheap, but you can cut cost by just planning ahead. I'ts no secret that I love mason jars and I have tons of them. But I wanted to have the mason jars with the handle for drinks. It would definitely go along with the rustic theme! And actually, the old school mason jars are really in right now. You can find them here at PB for $24 for a pack of 6. Ridiculous! I had 20 guests and I got 20 mason jars at Goodwill for .50 cents each! I knew 4 months in advance what I was looking for, so every time I would see a couple mason jars with a handle, I'd grab them. So, IF I bought the glasses at Pottery Barn, I would have spent $96. But, I bought them at all at Goodwill for $10.

Drink Table
Ok, onto the favors. I also picked up glass tea cups from various thrift stores for about .40 or .50 cents each. Then I bought the wicks, a couple of different scents, and a big bag of wax. I had a little too much fun making these while the kiddos were napping. You simply melt the wax in a glass bowl, drop some scent in, and then pour it into your cup or whatever you want really. The finished product.......
Everyone got glass ones, but I did two with the cup and saucer for the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom.
I then just bought a bag of 50 cellophane bags at Michael's for about $1.99 and then tied some polk a dot orange ribbon on there and they were ready to go! The two middle ones I wrapped with tulle, so you can use that as well. Instead of doing one cake, I did cupcakes. Lauren's all time favorite is carrot cake, so my mom made the carrot cake ones (hers are so ridiculously yummy) and I did yellow cupcakes with chocolate icing. And since turquoise is one of Lauren's wedding colors, I thought it would be just perfect to do Tiffany boxes! Too bad they weren't the real thing. :) The idea came to me while I was laying in bed and the next thing I know, I am scouring the internet for blue cupcake boxes. The ones I purchased, I found here. They had a window in the top, so I was able to put the label on the inside. The ones with ribbon were carrot cake, and ones without were yellow cake.

Instead of Tiffany & Co, I used their last name. Oh, and by the way, Tiffany has their own font, so you have to find knock off's to use.....

It didn't stop there. I bought plastic diamond rings at Michael's because there really needed to have a ring in there, no? Here I am.......hahaha
Me, Lauren, and my daughter, Maryn who will be the sweetest little flower girl! She is a bit excited as she practices her flower girl walk daily. I hope this gives you some fun ideas for bridal showers. Don't be afraid to shop your local thrift store. You really can find some fun things. Once you throw all of the glassware in the dishwasher, it is good as new!
